New DS 3: The French revival of urban premium

With the « new DS 3 », DS Automobiles is not launching a new model, but a strategic update of its urban SUV. The vehicle is repositioned around two major pillars of the automotive transition: light 48V hybridisation and 100% electric power. To this is added a strong emphasis on design, personalisation and French manufacturing, in an industrial context marked by the rationalisation of the DS range within Stellantis.

Behind the name « new DS 3 », there is no need to look for a radical technological or stylistic breakthrough. The model represents a thorough update of the DS 3 Crossback, refocused on engines that are more in tune with regulatory requirements and urban expectations. DS has opted for a simplified range, based around the 48V hybrid and the E-TENSE electric, while retaining a petrol offering in certain markets. This repositioning is accompanied by a focus on image. The brand is promoting a premium urban SUV that is compact but attractive, designed for customers who appreciate good looks, on-board technology and a form of French distinction. In a highly competitive segment, DS is looking less for raw performance than for overall coherence between design, use and electrification.

48V hybrid, a pragmatic approach to electrification

The DS 3 Hybrid is based on an architecture that is now familiar to Stellantis. A three-cylinder petrol engine combined with a 48V electric system and an electrified dual-clutch gearbox. Cumulative power reaches 145 bhp, with CO₂ emissions announced at up to 112 g/km according to the manufacturer. On paper, this light hybridisation is not intended to transform the DS 3 into an electric vehicle, but to optimise urban driving phases. DS says that in town, more than half the driving time can be done in 100% electric mode when conditions allow.

The system also boosts acceleration and recovers energy when the foot is lifted, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in real use. This technological choice reflects a transitional approach to electrification, particularly suited to urban or suburban motorists who do not yet wish to switch to all-electric, but are looking for a credible alternative to conventional internal combustion engines.

DS 3 E-TENSE: a technological showcase

At the same time, the DS 3 E-TENSE embodies the brand’s electric vision of the premium urban SUV segment. It features a 115kW (156bhp) electric motor, combined with a 54kWh battery. It has a claimed range of up to 404 km in the WLTP cycle, a figure made possible by optimised aerodynamics, thermal management and auxiliaries. DS is highlighting the expertise it has acquired in Formula E, in particular through its braking energy recovery and intelligent powertrain management functions.

The stated aim is clearly to limit range loss in a variety of driving conditions, particularly in urban and peri-urban environments, where this type of vehicle is most relevant. Without revolutionising the market, the DS 3 E-TENSE is part of a controlled electrification, designed for everyday use rather than spectacular performance.

French design, technology and production

In terms of styling, the DS 3 retains the brand’s hallmarks, with a distinctive DS Wings grille, DS MATRIX LED VISION headlamps depending on the trim level, and a wide range of personalisation options. Two-tone roofs, new exterior colours and interior ambiences are all part of the move upmarket. The cabin is centred around a 10.3-inch touchscreen featuring the DS IRIS SYSTEM, with connected navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and an on-board voice assistant.

Depending on the version, driving aids include peripheral vision systems, parking aids and advanced driving assistance functions inherited from the previous generation. Finally, DS insists that the model is produced in France, and assembled at the Poissy site. This argument was highlighted at the presentation of the DS 3 E-TENSE at the Grande Exposition du Fabriqué en France at the Élysée Palace, a symbol of both industrial and political positioning.

A DS 3 at the heart of a changing range

This repositioning comes at a particular time for DS Automobiles. Stellantis’ decision to abandon certain future projects, including that of a replacement for the DS 3 by 2028, raises questions about the brand’s long-term strategy. In this context, the current DS 3 appears to be a key model, responsible for maintaining DS’s presence in the premium urban SUV segment. With this update, DS is not seeking to revolutionise the market, but to consolidate its offering around credible electrified solutions, distinctive design and a focus on French expertise. It’s a measured approach, reflecting an energy transition that is also moving forward in stages in the automotive sector.
